When asked about what her work is like, Mattson replied, "Even though like this building and job is in a college campus, and it seems like we shouldn’t get that many negative experiences, we get a lot of harassment, and everyday average rudeness.” Mattson continued, “One of the nice things is talking to people I wouldn’t have otherwise, really.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Christopher Sutphen poses for a portrait at his job, the Stimson Marathon Gas Station in Athens, Ohio, on Sunday, Nov. 22, 2020. “This place has deeper roots than the other gas stations [in Athens],” Sutphen said. “Cindy and Mark are the owners and they’re constantly in here so it’s got more of a family feel for the establishment. And you can feel it too. As a consumer it’s a bit harder to feel that but when you work at one you can feel how the whole vibe is different [at other gas stations]. One thing I do also like is that almost all of our employees are students…so there’s more camaraderie.”</image:caption>

Dash, Mike said, was initially unexpected and not entirely wanted. “Hailee bought him for me for my birthday and I about shit a horse.” Over time, this feeling has changed dramatically. “He’s my boy,” said Mike. “He’s the best pet I’ve ever had. I had a hard time being open and honest about it. I wasn’t advocating for myself and therefore wasn’t making the best choices. I might have been embarrassed to have to excuse myself to check my blood sugar or to take my insulin. I just wanted to feel regular like everyone else.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Candice Hayes-Mcinnis doses a bolus of insulin from a pen prior to eating lunch inside her home in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Oct. 23, 2021. Hayes-Mcinnis has a stomach complication that occurs monthly that makes it difficult for her to keep food and liquids down. “That year [that I first moved into my house] I was in the emergency room probably a total of four times. Two of those times were in the same week,” she said. “If you’re not able to eat and keep anything down, you’re not able to take the insulin. And if you’re not able to process the insulin your organs will start to shut down.” The cost for these four visits Hayes-Mcinnis is responsible for she estimates to be about $11,000, while she estimates the total amount of her medical bills resulting from hospitals visits from the past few years due to being a Type 1 at around $20,000.</image:caption>

You don’t typically feint on a high blood sugar. Which is different. So it was really kind of just…I call it the grace of god, some people call it luck.”</image:caption>

Matt, this comment is for you since I realize this picture doesn’t have a filled in caption. His mom, also a Type 1 diabetic, used to give him her insulin and supplies while he was low. She died from complications of being Type 1 and Dakota didn’t realize what she was doing until she was dead. So that’s this photograph.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Lynne makes her way through the kitchen back to her recliner after using the bathroom early one Wednesday morning. Wayne began following her to ensure her safety, regardless of the time of day, as she started to fall and injure herself.</image:caption>

<image:caption>With Lynne already sound asleep, Wayne reaches up to turn out the light for the night after arriving home from his newspaper delivery route. They started spending the night in their two recliners, which accommodated Lynne’s limited mobility. Wayne chose to be next to Lynne, where they slept side-by-side for four years.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The warmth from the Roberts’ house illuminates a cold winter morning. While Wayne was at work, on April 6, Lynne wandered out of the house wearing nothing but pajamas and socks. It was 28 degrees. Wayne saw her leave through the two-way camera he installed and raced home to find her clutching a fence. “Where are you going, baby?” Wayne asked Lynne, later when they were inside again. She told him she was going home.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Wayne comforts Lynne after she struggled to get out of her recliner for a bath with Nichole Newby, a home health aid. This was the first time the Roberts’ accepted in-home health care services, which reflected Lynne’s need for medical assistance outside of Wayne’s capabilities.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Roberts sleep next to each other in their recliners in the early morning. He sleeps next to Lynne so that he can be available if she wakes up in the middle of the night. “My goal is to make her last part of life fright free,” Wayne said. “I never want her thinking she has to go alone.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Now in hospice, Lynne tightly grasps Wayne’s hand while lying in bed. Lynne is having increasing difficulty swallowing and has moved away from solid foods. She now drinks water through a straw or by sucking on a wet sponge. “This is no way to live,” Lynne said.</image:caption>

Wayne suspected she was talking about her old ranch in northwestern Montana. “I loved it,” Lynne said of her old home. “I never should have sold it. All the wide-open spaces…And there were no close neighbors. You could have any animal you wanted…I had several horses and dogs. It was wonderful.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Wayne sits with Lynne in what he expects to be her last day of life, on Monday, May 27, 2024. “It’s a conflict. I want to take care of her, I want her to be happy. And I want her to die,” said Wayne. “It’s the worst thing. I mean she’s been a free spirit her whole life and then to have someone tell you that you can’t get out of bed ever again…?
